An exhibition titled “Taanaa- Baanaa: Traditional Textiles and Embroideries of India” was organized in K.L Mehta Dayanand College For Women to celebrate the rich and diverse heritage of Indian textiles. The event aimed to raise awareness about the country’s age-old craftsmanship, regional weaving techniques, and the cultural stories woven into each piece of fabric.
Objectives:
1)To showcase the diversity of Indian handlooms and embroidery styles
2)To educate students about the cultural and historical significance of textile traditions
3)To promote appreciation for sustainable and handmade crafts
Exhibition Highlights:
The exhibition featured textile and embroidery samples from across the country, including:
1)Phulkari from Punjab
2)Chikankari from Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh
3)Kantha from West Bengal
4)Tanchhoi from Varanasi
5)Bandhani and Patola from Gujarat
6)Ikat from Odisha and Andhra Pradesh
7)Pashmina and Sozni embroidery from Kashmir
8)Kalamkari art from Andhra Pradesh
9)Kanjeevaram and Chanderi saris and many more.
Each display was accompanied by a brief description of the origin, material, technique, and cultural relevance of the textile.
The event was inaugurated by Principal Dr.Meenu Dua. Dr.Dua appreciated the efforts of students and faculty members. Further Dr. Sangeeta Kulshrestha, Head of Home Science Department highlighted the importance of preserving traditional weaving arts and supporting the handloom sector which plays a vital role in India’s economy. Ms. Archna Dua, Senior faculty member, also praised the exhibition and the efforts of the B.Sc.(Home Science) final year students.
The exhibition was highly appreciated by other departmental faculty members, students and visitors. It provided a deep sense of pride in India’s cultural history and encouraged many to explore careers in textile design and craft preservation.The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms.Benu Mehta appreciating the hardwork of students, supporting staff who made the event successful. Dr.Pragati Chitkara and Ms.Priyanka Pawar coordinated the event well and made the exhibition successfull.
The event was a perfect blend of art, history, and education, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended.
